Point your camera at a UPC or EAN barcode on any packaged food and Satvora retrieves the full nutrition panel, ingredient list, and additive flags in under a second — no typing required.

How Barcode Scanning Works in Satvora

Four steps from scan to logged nutrition — under 5 seconds.

1

Point camera at barcode

Open Satvora and tap the barcode icon. Point your phone camera at the UPC or EAN barcode on the package. The scanner locks on in under a second.

2

Database lookup

Satvora queries verified food product databases using the barcode's numeric identifier to retrieve the official nutrition facts and ingredient list.

3

Review nutrition and ingredients

The full Nutrition Facts panel appears instantly — calories, macros, sodium, sugar, fiber — alongside the ingredient list with additive flags.

4

Log and track

Confirm your serving size and log it to your daily diary. The product is cached on your device for offline access next time.

What a Barcode Actually Is (and Is Not)

A barcode is an identifier — not a database.

The black-and-white lines you see on a package encode a unique numeric ID — a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), standardized by GS1. This number identifies the specific product and manufacturer but contains zero nutrition data on its own.

When Satvora scans a barcode, it uses that GTIN to query food product databases — which store the nutrition facts, ingredient declarations, and serving size that the manufacturer has officially filed. The accuracy of the nutrition data you see is therefore as good as what the manufacturer reported.

This is why it is always worth quickly comparing the app's result with the printed Nutrition Facts panel on the actual package, especially for products you eat frequently.

Full macro breakdown

Protein, total carbohydrates, total fat, dietary fiber, and sugar per serving.

Sodium and micronutrients

Sodium, calcium, iron, and other declared minerals where available.

Ingredient list

Complete ingredient declaration in order of weight, including E-numbers and additive names.

Additive flags

Satvora highlights known ultra-processed additives, artificial sweeteners, and industrial emulsifiers.

Serving size context

Per-serving AND per-100g values so you can compare products accurately regardless of package size.

Honest Limitations of Barcode Scanning

We believe in transparency. Here is where barcode scanning has real constraints.

Very new local brands

Small regional producers or very recently launched SKUs may not yet appear in product databases. Use the Label Scanner (OCR) feature as a fallback.

Home-cooked meals

Barcodes only cover packaged, commercially sold products. For home-cooked dal, roti, or curry, use the AI photo scanning feature instead.

Database accuracy depends on manufacturer data

Satvora retrieves nutrition data as filed by the manufacturer. If the manufacturer's filing is outdated or contains errors, the data reflects that. Always cross-check with the physical label if accuracy is critical.

Damaged or partially obscured barcodes

Severely torn, wrinkled, or shiny barcodes may not scan cleanly. If the camera fails, manually enter the barcode number or use the label reader.
